Prime Components - manufactures micro-electrical components

During the spring of 2023, I had the privilege of interning at Prime Components, a company located in Vadodara’s GIDC industrial hub. Over the course of 10 days, I immersed myself in the day-to-day operations of a business specializing in the manufacture of electrical components such as terminal blocks, rocker switches, connectors, and fuse holders. This internship gave me the opportunity to witness how theoretical knowledge from my electrical engineering studies is applied in real-world scenarios, especially within a manufacturing environment.

The primary objective of this internship was to gain a deep understanding of how different departments in an electrical engineering business operate. I explored everything from the technical aspects of producing micro-electrical components to the administrative and business side of the company. This comprehensive exposure solidified my goal of one day running my own business in this field, specializing in the manufacture and sale of electrical components.

My work and projects

One of the most impactful aspects of the internship was the hands-on experience I gained in the laboratory. I was involved in testing micro-electrical components, performing crucial evaluations such as the series connection test, the milli-voltage drop test, the temperature rise test, and the secureness test. These tests ensure the reliability of electrical components under various conditions, from voltage surges to mechanical stress. I also had the opportunity to work with ultrasonic welding machines, Vernier calipers, and micrometer screw gauges, all of which are vital tools for ensuring precision in the production process.

This internship also deepened my understanding of complex concepts from physics and chemistry, such as the application of Boyle’s Law in mass production and the use of electroplating for industrial purposes. I gained practical skills in soldering and learned about the crucial regulations, such as RoHS compliance, that govern the use of hazardous substances in electrical products.

Despite these learning opportunities, I faced challenges—particularly in the lab. Testing high-risk electrical components was initially intimidating, but overcoming that fear was a critical step in my development as an aspiring electrical engineer. It reinforced my understanding that working with these components comes with inherent risks that must be managed with skill and care.

Ultimately, this internship not only enhanced my technical knowledge but also shaped my long-term career vision. I now aspire to combine my engineering skills with entrepreneurship, aiming to create and sell advanced teleoperation-enabled products in the future. The experience at Prime Components provided me with the foundation to pursue this ambition with confidence and clarity.
